In Compliance Magazine recently published a good primer on compliance requirements for IT equipment around the world. Following is a summary of the electromagnetic compatibility regulations.
A set of common standards serve as the basis for global EMC regulations:
- Conducted and radiated emissions are based on CISPR 22 & FCC Part 15
- Immunity is based on CISPR 24
- Power line harmonic emissions is based on IEC 61000-3-2 & -3-12
- Voltage fluctuations and flicker is based on IEC 61000-3-3 & -3-11
National adoption is varied, depending on country differences and politics.
For example, in the United States only emission testing is required by law. In the European Union, manufacturers are required to demonstrate conformity with emissions, immunity, harmonics, and flicker. See the chart below for conformity assessment details in major markets.
The timing of regulation also varies from country to country. For example, CISPR 22 limits on radiated emissions between 1 and 6 GHz became mandatory in October 2010 for Taiwan, in March 2011 for China, and October 2011 in Australia, the European Union and Japan.
