What is Hazardous Location Testing?

Hazardous Location Testing verifies that a product does not present a risk of explosion when placed into a potentially explosive atmosphere (hazardous location). The testing is performed by evaluating the method of protection applied in the design of the device. The testing process consists of subjecting the device to a potentially explosive atmosphere and attempt to cause a critical failure within the device’s protection system. If a device does not experience a critical failure and meets all additional requirements set forth by the applicable hazardous location standard, the device is considered compliant for use within the tested environment. Examples of protection methods for products used in hazardous locations include:
